چکیده

to leave a phenol-insoluble mucoid. This contains a substance with the characteristics of a mucopolysaccharide-protein complex. 5. The water-soluble mucoids contain a complex which is formed by interaction between the phenolinsoluble mucoids and a water-soluble protein of the cornea. 6. The acid mucopolysaccharide can be prepared free from protein by incubation with trypsin. Galactose, glucosamine and galactosamine have been identified as constituents of the mucopolysaccharide, by chromatography and ionophoresis on ifiter paper. 7. The corneal mucopolysaccharide is not a substrate for hyaluronidase. 8. Gel-forming proteins have been isolated from the insoluble mucoid and found to contain the same amino-acids as gelatin, but to differ from it in their electrophoretic behaviour. 9. It is suggested that in situ the acid mucopolysaccharide is combined with proteins of the collagen group.

The behaviour of Lactobacillus arabinosus towards nicotinic acid and its derivatives.

These investigations originated in studying the basis of a method for microbiological assay of nicotinic acid (McIlwain & Stanley, 1948). The method was that in which acid produced from glucose by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 is titrated with alkali after a period of incubation of about 3 days. The assay depends on the empirical observation that the quantity of titratable acid produced during ...

The effect of 3-indoleacetic acid on the response of Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 to nicotinamide.

Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 has been widely used as an assay organism for nicotinic acid (NA) since the development of the method by Snell and Wright (1). Although it has been realized that other substances present in tissue extracts may interfere with the bioassay, the nature of such substances has not been elucidated. During an investigation of tryptophan metabolism in the pea plant, we stu...

Application of Nicotinic Acid Functionalized Chlorosulfonic Acid as a Green Catalyst for the Synthesis of Bis(2-methyl-1Hindole)Derivatives

3-Carboxy-1-sulfopyridin-1-ium chloride ([CPySO3H]+Cl-) as a novel ionic organocatalyst for thecondensation of aldehydes and 2-methylindole to synthesize bis(2-methyl-1H-indole) derivatives inacetonitrile at room temperature has been developed. Some tetrakis (2-methyl-1H-indole)derivatives have also been synthesized by the reaction of 2,2'-(butane-1,4-diylbis(oxy))dibenzaldehyde and 2-methylind...

The effect of certain sulfonamides upon Lactobacillus arabinosus in a nicotinic acid-restricted medium.

The extensive use of microbiological procedures for the determination of vitamins is well known. Although most of these methods have rather general applicability, it is possible that the conditions of a particular experiment might require alteration of the medium in order to insure its adequacy for the samples being analyzed. Such a situation might well arise in connection with the Lactobacillu...

Amino Acid Nutrition of Lactobacillus Arabinosus

The growth factors required by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 have been studied extensively by Snell and Wright (I), Isbell (2), and Lewis (3). Investigation of the nitrogen requirement has been limited. Hydrolyzed casein has been found to supply the essential nitrogen when supplemented with tryptophane and cystine. Glutamic acid has been found essential (4), and quantitative levels have been de...
